What Jesus’ Death Meant

Apr 16, 2026

What Jesus death means. The death burial and resurrection is a package and sometime the death don't get a lot of love

because in order to have a resurrection, you had to have a death. It's all one package and you really gotta understand what this death means. And till still today in Star Date 2026. Okay? There are still a lot of people that don't know the difference between the old and new Covenant. And what you get in a lot of churches is a mixture of both.

There are still people today that are trying to keep the 10 Commandments as though that's a standard for living. That we need some sort of moral code and a lot of preachers that go through a buffet line picking and choosing what part of the law that they want to keep. There weren't just 10 as I share this all the time.

There were 613 laws. Which ones are you going to keep?

James two says, he who tries to keep the whole law but fails in one point. This is not on the list today, but just jot this down. This is very key to your understanding. You can't cherry pick the law. You, it's not like going through a, it's not like you can go through a b buffet line and pick I'm gonna pick this.

No lying. Let me preach that. No, no cheating. Lemme pick that. No stealing, no cheating, no adultery, no it's, it is impossible to keep the law. Okay? You'll fail every time. And God doesn't grade on a curve, is all or nothing.

James 2:10. He who tries to keep the whole law but fails in one point is guilty of all. Did you hear that? You try to keep, try. You can't cherry pick. You pick? The Sabbath, some preacher will pick the Sabbath. Okay? You try to keep that, but if you fail in other things, you're guilty of the whole thing.

John 19:30, when Jesus had finished the sour wine, he said, it is finished. We're gonna talk about the importance of the death. When Jesus had finished the sour wine, he said, it is finished. Ah, it's finished. But wait a minute, what does that mean? What was finished? See, you can, what people quote unquote religion called preaching and preach that.

But what's finished? I don't know. It is finished. When he said it is finished, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. That means he died. Okay? He died. All right. It's finished. What was finished, the law was finished.

Okay, look at Hebrews chapter nine. Now, here's something that's very insightful, and first before I drop this bombshell on you. I want to let you know that all of the chapter divisions in the Bible verse distinctions is good for us to be able to go and say, Hey, let's turn to Psalm 105:2, because we know where to turn.

But the original, the Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew. The New Testament was originally written in Greek and there were no verse distinctions. There were no chapter divisions, though all those were added by the translators. All scriptures given by inspiration of God. Everybody say all scripture is given by inspiration of God, given by inspiration of God.

Okay, let's be clear about that. Let's get that out the way. Now. All these chapter divisions and things like that, even how the, your Bible is split up if you have a print edition. It's got Old Testament, the beginning, and then after 39 books. 39 books in the Old Testament, 27 in the new 66 and all.

Yes, I believe that Bible, the 39 Old Testament books, 27 in the new. Okay, but how it's split up in your Bible where you go to Old Testament, new Testament, that also was added by the translators.

If you see my Bible here, it's got the New Testament, Matthew one, but I submit to you the New Testament did not start in Matthew chapter one with Jesus birth.

I'm gonna prove that to you by the inspired word. Let's go to Hebrews nine.

The word testament or covenant, that's another word for it. Old Testament, new Testament. What does that mean? What is a testament? It's a will, like when you make out wills, it's referred to as the last will and testament. A testament is a will. Okay, so to have a testament, it doesn't start with a birth.

It starts with a death.

But like I say all the time, never take something just because a preacher says it. We should read the, we should live by the 10 Commandments. That's what the Bible says. It's not what the Bible says it was for a people at a particular time, but it's not for us. Okay. All the scripture was given by inspiration, right?

And we should read the Old Testament with a New Testament lens. And like I said earlier, the problem in churches in many churches is mixture.

Okay? They mix the old and the new. The new covenant. That's the only thing that we should be preaching today is the new covenant. That doesn't mean we don't teach out of the Old Testament. I teach out of the Old Testament a lot, but I teach it with a New Testament lens with sunglasses, SON glasses or cross-eyed through the lens of the cross.

We, under the new covenant, we are not required to keep the law, as a matter of fact. And see, I wanna make emphasis on this because it's not just that the old covenant law is we just we shouldn't teach that. And it's not benign, it's not harmless it's harmful.

What people think will keep people from sinning will actually increase sinning. If you want to increase sinning in churches, tell people to keep the 10 commandments. Yeah.

Now, here's something I've only heard new covenant preachers preach, and I challenge you to gimme somebody who teaches mixture. That anybody that tells you that you need to teach the law, they don't touch this verse, and I missed it for years. I'll give you my testimony. First Corinthians 15:56.

W e're gonna come to this in a second, but just jot this one down. The power of sin is the law. Now that's easy to look to just gloss over. It's a short little verse, but man, you gotta come to grips with that

if you going to live right. Everybody talking about right living. But see, it's right believing that produces right living. I'm all about holiness and living above sin, but under the new covenant, when the new covenant is preached, when grace is preached, you will live holier by accident than you ever could on purpose.

The new covenant is not about behavior modification.

Pause.

The new covenant is not about behavior modification, it's about transformation. And transformation comes by the preaching of the new covenant. It is the only thing to preach.

Thank you, Lord is right. Woo. Thank you Lord. The new, okay. The strength. One translation says The strength of sin is the law. The power of sin is the law, The law came in, watch this to increase the trespass (Romans 5:20).

What the law came in. See, it was our tutor Galatians say, to bring us to Christ. Once we're in Christ, we're no longer under the Tudor. Romans 10:4 says the Christ is the end of the law to those that believe,

the law came into what; increase the trespass? God didn't even want 'em to have the law. They asked for the law. God gave it to 'em. Show us what to do. We'll do it. God said, okay. You think so? He gave 'em the law. They couldn't keep it. The law was given to bring people to the end of themself to show them their need of a savior, to point to Christ.

Now, don't get all Matthew five on me. When they when they said heaven and earth will pass away, but the Bible says the law will never pass away. I didn't say it passed away. I said, it's not for us. It's another story. You come back next week, I can give you the end of the story.

But why the law still exists and it has a purpose to shut everybody up. 'cause there's some people who don't realize they need a savior. They think they're goodie to chews and they do everything right.

The law gonna bring you to your knees.

It still serve that purpose. People think they don't need Christ. The law bring you to your knees. That's another story for another day. But I want you to see this. Re remember, let's come back to the original point. A testament can only start with the death. So it can't start in Matthew one with Jesus birth.

Having said that, I say this all the time, never take something just 'cause a preacher says it. Make sure you can find it in the word. I want you to see it for yourself. In the new covenant, it says, therefore, he is the mediator of a new covenant. And here's extra credit read 2 Corinthians chapter three. It tells us. We should be preaching. It says He made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant Now look at this. Therefore, he is the mediator of a what? New covenant. So that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.

Since a death say death, a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

See, that death was significant. When Jesus said, man, it is finished. That law was finished. In fact, when he said it is finished, the veil of the temple, the veil that was in the tabernacle, the temple, which held the ark of the covenant, that veil. Over the most holy place was torn into, from the top to the bottom.

'cause that was the end of the law.

And why is this important? I'll share that with you later. But watch this. A death has occurred that redeems them

from the transgressions committed under the first covenant for where say, A will. Another word for testament, where a will is involved the death of the one who made it must be established. Next verse for a will takes effect only at death.

See. There's your proof right there. It cannot, the New Testament cannot start in Matthew one. It starts with it is finished.

A will or a testament takes effect only at death. Since it is not enforced as long as the one who made it is alive.

Remember the division of the Bible was added by the translators. Can you see that? There it is right there. Lemme say it again. For the people in the back, a will takes effect, only a death since it is not enforced at all, as long as the one who made it is alive. The new covenant, the New Testament, started at Jesus death, not his birth.

Hebrews 10. by a single offering. Here's the good news. He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. All time. In order to have time, you have to have past, present, and future. All our sins were wiped away on the cross by a single offering.

When Jesus died, that old covenant was finished. In the old covenants; See, in order to get God to respond with his goodness, they had to perform. Their relationship with God under the old covenant was based on their performance. They had to initiate. In order for God to respond, they had to initiate with good behavior.

That's the old covenant mindset. You cannot live free with a old covenant mindset. Old Covenant mindset is about earning and achieving and performing, trying to get God do things to get God to accept you. He has already accepted you through the finished work. I always talk about the finished work. that's John 19:30.

That's the when the old covenant ended and Jesus is ushering in a new covenant. It is a better covenant because Jesus has done all the work on the cross. We don't initiate with good behavior. He initiated with his obedience on the cross. by one man's disobedience. Adam, the reason why we need to get saved in the first place is because Adam's disobedience in the garden.

By one man's disobedience. Many were made sinners. You're not a sinner because of what you do or any of that stuff, you're a sinner because of how you were born, you inherited the sin nature from Adam. By his disobedience, not yours, his disobedience.

We inherited the sinful nature. We became sinners. Good news is, by one man's obedience, not your obedience. By one man's obedience many were made righteous. You were made righteous. You cannot be righteous on your own. You can't be righteous by keeping the law. You're righteous because of what Jesus did.

We have a parallel in Romans five. The disobedience made us sinners.

You you could do a lot of good things, but you're still a sinner. You can do all the good stuff you want and help people, help little old ladies across the street give blood to the Red Cross. You can do all that kind of stuff, but that doesn't make you righteous. It can't because it is not because of your disobedience.

It's because what you inherited from Adam. So by one man's obedience, by Jesus' obedience (Oh, that's the good news); many were made righteous.

Wow. If Jesus obedience wasn't enough to make you righteous today, you know what you're saying. You're saying basically what Adam did was more powerful than what Jesus did.

Because his disobedience was so powerful that all of us were made sinners because of that. And you're saying one man's obedience; Jesus' obedience can't make us all righteous by His single sacrifice; t hat we gotta do something to be righteous, to be acceptable, to be pleasing to God. You know what you're saying? You're saying that what Adam did was more powerful than what Jesus did.

His disobedience could make us our sinners, but oh no, Jesus obedience is not enough to make us righteous. No. He perfected for all time. He finished it. He didn't start it. He finished it. Hallelujah. We start at the finish line. So we get to enjoy a covenant that we didn't earn and we didn't deserve.

We just walk into it just like Adam did. Adam just walked into something. When God, in six days made his home for him, made everything pretty, and he just walked into something he didn't earn, he didn't deserve, just placed him in that garden. Adam showed up late.

And that's why we get to say, wow! We get to wake up every day to this covenant. Oh my goodness. Once you get it you, once you see it, you can't unsee it.

You just enjoy your covenant with God understanding your sins have been erased. Yeah. What about sin? I ain't thinking about sin. It's not even on my radar. If you read, we're getting deep up in here, but if you read Hebrews 8, 9, 10, you'll find out that if the old covenant sacrifice worked, people would not have a consciousness of sin.

But there was a reminder of sin every year because it couldn't erase a consciousness of sin because they still had that nature of sin. They said if it worked,

they wouldn't need any more sacrifices. But Jesus perfected for all time with one sacrifice.

Ain't no more sacrifices. And what that means is we shouldn't have any consciousness of sin because of what he did. When we get out and wrap our mind around what he did, renew our mind to what he did, like he took my sin. What you gonna do about sin? Why don't your pastor preach more about sin? I'm telling you what he did with it.

He canceled them so we not thinking about 'em.

You know what they tell you when you play golf and you got water on the right and the woods on the other side on the left and you got this beautiful fairway down the middle, they said, don't think about the water. Don't think about the woods, 'cause you get up over that tee box and you thinking about the woods, you're going in the woods. Most likely if you're thinking about the water, but you got this fairway in the middle. What God wants us to do is think about the fairway. We're not thinking about sin. If you think about sin, that's where you going.

People think about sin all the time. Why? Because they, the law is preached.

The strength of sin is the law. The law came in to increase the trespass The devil needs the law to whoop you and beat you up beside your head.

The old way, the way of the old covenant is not for today. Nobody could ever make it work.

The Old Testament saints couldn't make it work. Let look at these scriptures. Acts 13:39. Let's go over these quickly. I'll try. And by him, everyone who believes is freed from everything.

Another translation says, justied from everything, from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.

Romans 3:28. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. Underscore that word apart. Apart. Say apart. We're justified. Or the word justified means declared righteous. We're declared righteous by faith. What apart from the works of the law. Look at verse Galatians 2:16.

Yeah. We know that a person is not justified or declared righteous by the works of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ. So we also have believed in Christ Jesus in order that we may be declared righteous by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law

sounds like Paul's trying to get us to see something. He says the same thing twice in the same verse. By works of the law no one (that includes me and you) will be justified. Galatians 3:11. Now it is evident that no one is justified, no one is justified before God by the law. For the righteous shall live by faith.

Actually, the previous verse says when you try to keep the law, you put yourself under a curse. The 10th verse says, for all who rely, what does it mean to rely on?

Depend on. What in the world are people trying to keep the 10 commandments for?

For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse. Pause. What? This in our Bible the whole time.

God didn't hide this stuff for from us. This is the new covenant preaching. If  you're relying on the works of the law, you're under a curse for it is written cursed is everyone who does not abide by the Sabbath.

No. All things

Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the law and do them. Remember, it's all or nothing. James 2:10. Whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point is guilty of all of it.

So God just wanted to make it clear. You cannot keep it and you put yourself under a curse and you're gonna increase sinning in the church.

This message of do right and behave good. Be better, do more. Try harder for God. Look at all that He is done for you and you spent all night partying and drinking and snorting and coke all this kind of stuff. There's no shortage of mess out there to get yourself involved in.

When I was on drugs and stuff, it was just simple. Now, man, it was a lot of stuff then. But now, it's moved over to prescription drugs. They got prescription drugs. I heard somebody say when they took 'em off of this, I can't even pronounce it, I don't know where they come up with their name, Vicodin and all this kind of stuff.

They said when they were on this pain medication when they came off of it, they felt so good on that. They cried when the doctor took them off of it 'cause they felt so good with it and people getting high up or prescription drugs. I can't wrap my mind around it. I don't know what that is, but all kind of stuff.

People can die off prescription drugs.

There's no shortage of mess you can get out there, but like for me to get up here, just tell people what they've been doing all night. And they already know that. They already know where they've been. They already know what they snorted. They already know what they smoked. They already know, you know what they did or they fornicated or they committed.

All I do is preach the good news man. And if you believe the right thing, you'll live right.

My job is not to get you to live right. My job is to get you to believe. And you know what, it's more than 613 'cause people make up more.

They got these manmade church laws. Dress a certain length. What do they do? They have a tape measure.

Do they have meetings over this stuff? 'cause then I, I discovered that, okay. Where the ladies had to wear dresses and then the leggings come in. Can you wear leggings? And then they figured out, I guess you can do that in some churches. What do they do? They have a meeting about this stuff?

No, no makeup for women. Some women don't like makeup, but that's a choice. It's not a law.

Colossians two addresses this. Verse 20. If with Christ, you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations? Do not handle. Do not wear makeup. Do not wear pants. It is all included in here. Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch referring.

Now, I think people, their intentions are right. They honestly believe that the law's gonna help people rather than hurt 'em. Yeah. I think their motives are right, but it still produces the same thing.

And this addresses this. Don't handle, don't touch, don't taste Referring to things that all perish as they're used according to human precepts and teachings. These indeed have indeed an appearance of wisdom.

See, pause. 'cause people actually they'll leave churches like, yeah, I'm gonna do better.

I came to church on Easter. Man, I'm really encouraged to do better. I'm gonna try harder for God and get out there and they fall right back into the same thing, 'cause the law can't produce good living.

These, indeed. What's these, what he talking about? Remember, all these manmade rules, if we sum it up, have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and a ascetiism like what I decided to look that up. One commentary says ascetiism is a

a manmade system of rules based on human commands and teachings.

It says, living by such regulations of self-made religion has a certain appearance of wisdom, but it has absolutely no value in restraining sensual indulgence.

That's what it's saying here. That ascetiism, manmade religion, severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh. Has no value. They can't stop sinning in other words.

2 Corinthians 3:7; it gets deeper. Now if the Ministry of death, carved

I'm not gonna read the whole chapter. This is referring to

the law, but in particular the big 10. This is not even talking about the whole 613, it's talking about the big 10. How do we know that? Carved in letters of stone. He's talking about the 10 Commandments. It's the Ministry of Death.

You got churches killing people slowly. They don't even realize they're getting killed. Did I make this up?

And don't gimme these What abouts until you deal with this. What about. I haven't even given you all the scriptures about the harmfulness of the law, ministry of death, and in a bigger context of this series, I'm talking about relaxing with God. You cannot relax with God, you cannot chill with God, you cannot enjoy your relationship with God when you are trying to earn and achieve and think that His acceptance of you is based on your behavior.

It was that way in the old, but that's the old covenant mindset. Come on over into the new covenant and relax with God, and chill with God

because you put yourself under death and condemnation. Look at verse nine,

for if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceeded in glory.

He's calling the law a ministry of condemnation. You put yourself under guilt w hen you are under the law. You're always going to feel like you don't measure up, that you've gotta earn his love. You gotta have to earn his favor. You have to earn, it's, you gotta do more. You gotta read more. You gotta pray harder.

All this kind of stuff.

That's the trick. This hamster wheel of religion, keeps you on the hamster wheel. I teach this in my foundation course that you can get online, but it's like the old Jetsons.

I seen 'em, they got 'em right now. They got flying taxis, man. What a day we living there, man. They got they got Uber flying Uber.

I was like, what? I digress. But the Jetsons it start off with, no, I think it was the end of the show when they had George, he walking his dog on that treadmill (Astro, right?) I love Astro Man. I Carla know my astro voice 'cause she'd come home with some food, but she didn't bring me any.

And Astro would be like ruh ruh roubt re. But Astro that was one of his lines. You remember that Gloria? Ruh ruh roubt George is walking him on a treadmill and somehow, George's on a treadmill and Astro jump off. And now George's on this treadmill can't get off. He call him for his wife and Jane stop this crazy thing, and Elroy his son and Astro at the side.

They just watching, that thing going a hundred miles and hour The dog's supposed to be on it. Now George is on it. He's just watching. And that's how people, these people that don't like church, they don't have a problem with God. They have a problem with church. Just do more, try harder. They just forget it. They jump off the treadmill and then they watch you.

The thing about the treadmill, it doesn't have a destination.

When you're running outside, you might like, you could see things and you could make a little loop and come back and see different things. But when you get on a treadmill of religion. Nobody ever tells you when it's enough. That's why you can never relax with God, 'cause they never tell you when it's enough.

Yes. And there's some folk, they just get tired of it. Just forget it. That's who I'm for. I'm for the folks' tired with religion. I'm not for church folk. I'm for people that's tired and worn out and we gotta get this message out to 'em because see the gatekeepers, see, they don't they don't preach the power of sins is the law.

And it's not them. It's really, the devil hates the message of grace. But like I told you, the barbarians are knocking at the gate.

Oh my goodness. I get excited about this kind of stuff, man, because this is freedom. Romans seven, verse eight. But sin, we're all against sin. But how do you overcome it? How do you get free from it? Sin seizing an opportunity. This is how the devil whoops people.

He needs the law seizing an opportunity through the commandment produced in me, all kind of covetousness. You want people to covet, give them the law. For apart from the law. Remember I told you underscore a previous verse, apart from the law, what? What's wrong with a little bit of law.

See, it's just like a lot of religious folk. They don't get it. Siri, I don't get that. I Keep saying they don't get that. But once you see it, you can't unsee it. Apart from the law. If you want to be free, watch this. You can't cherry pick. What's wrong with a, come on, what's wrong with a little more moral code?

The whole Bible is do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That's the whole law and the prophets. Problem is, we ain't under that law.

When somebody cussing you out and stole from you and did all kind of evil stuff to you, how you going to do unto them as you would have them do unto you? All that stuff goes out the window when the poop hits the fan. You can't keep it, man. That flesh will rise up. What you say.

Huh? Ask Lisa. I seen her.

I'm just kidding. But we all got a little Lisa in us. And it's nice to quote, do unto others. What's wrong with a little law? If you're going to be free from sins grip, it doesn't happen It happens apart from the law.
